Performative art installation, “Steakhouse”, at Plas Bodfa, Wales
I was given a Rider-Waite tarot deck in 1991. At the time, I was working as a ‘carny’ in the balloon dart booth of Crown Amusements (a traveling carnival) and doing research for my thesis in Ethnomusicology. At the time, my colleague claimed the cards were used for “fortune-telling”, but as I began studying the symbolism and history of the deck, it became clear that tarot reading could give people much more agency over their futures than a supposed psychic reading. The symbols and images on the cards are capable of provoking a whole internal dialogue with one’s intuition and subconscious thoughts and emotions.
I’ve never had my tarot read by a professional, but I have spent the past thirty years reading for myself and others with a variety of interesting decks and in a variety of countries and communities. Just like the potato chip bags, these readings tell stories, and I am happy to collaborate with you to let the tales unfold.
